Police deployment in Wiener Neustadt: drug raid with manhunt

In the late hours of Monday evening there was a significant police operation in Wiener Neustadt, which was linked to investigations into organized drug crime. Parts of the city center had to be closed briefly to enable the measures to be carried out. Police spokesman Johann Baumschlager confirmed that searches had recently ended at a vacant building that served as a suspected covert location for drug activity.

The emergency services discovered cannabis plantations in the building in question, which is located in the pedestrian zone and was identified as the former Brodtisch Passage. According to the police, these are associated with a criminal organization. A handgun was also seized during the investigation, although its origin is still being investigated. The police carried out the measures with the support of special units, including the Cobra special unit, which also used drones and service dogs. Despite intensive search efforts, one suspect managed to escape.

Police deployment and closures

The affected streets, including Neunkirchner Straße and Brodtischgasse, were closed to pedestrians and vehicles for several hours. Police issued instructions to protect residents and asked them to stay indoors until the situation was under control. Baumschlager explained that there was “perpetrator contact” in the building during the search, which made the situation particularly explosive. The surrounding areas continue to be monitored by police to rule out possible further threats.

The suspicion that this was a larger case of drug-related crime was reinforced by the high number of electricity bills associated with the operation of the plantations. These tips ultimately led to extensive police investigations into the property in question. The police spokesman emphasized that ongoing investigations are necessary to fully clarify the background to the criminal activities.

In addition to the secured weapon, the background of the cannabis plantations is now being intensively investigated in order to gain further information about the people who may be behind the operation. The police thanked the population for their patient cooperation during the operation and announced planned follow-up measures.
