Family grille ends in the hospital: 14 injuries by flue gas

Last weekend, a family in the Horn district of Lower Austria experienced a worrying event when 14 family members had to be taken to the hospital for grilling in a garage due to flue gas poisoning. This alarming situation occurred in the municipality of Drosendorf-Zisserdorf and was announced on Monday by the State Police Directorate in St. Pölten.

Those affected, whose age groups ranged from five to 82 years, had to be treated for dizziness. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the police were called to a house. A 55-year-old told the officials that he had carried out the grilling in the garage while the family celebrated in the adjacent Stüberl. To ensure sufficient ventilation, he opened the garage door and also let some windows tilted. In addition, the door to the garden was often open.

unexpected health problems

The family meeting tragically turned when the man's mother suddenly felt nausea. These symptoms spread quickly among the other family members, which led to the immediate alarm of the rescue. The sanitary services transported the patients into several hospitals, including the Horn, Hollabrunn, Zwettl and Waidhofen state clinics on the Thaya and the University Hospital Krems.

The incident underlines the dangers associated with grilling in closed rooms. Fire brigade and rescue workers strongly advise to use grill devices only outdoors to avoid health risks through toxic gases. These hurtful circumstances are not just a local problem, but an important security awareness that should be observed in grill celebrations in closed areas to prevent similar incidents in the future
