Semmering in new splendor: historical buildings are coming to new life!
On December 9, 2024, State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner invited people to an important network meeting at Villa Schönthaler am Semmering. At this event, the “Baukultur am Semmering” project was presented, which aims to renovate venerable buildings in the region by 2030 and bring Semmering out of its “Sleeping Beauty slumber”. Mikl-Leitner emphasized the need for a joint commitment from investors and the local population to preserve and revitalize the historical value and architecture of the region. “We have to transfer from the gray to the golden age,” said the state governor, who also pointed out the importance of craftsmanship in this process. This project is supported by various organizations that are committed to preserving traditional craft techniques, such as ARGE Bau, which represents over 100,000 employees. The initiative includes more than 80 detailed projects that are being planned and are aimed at positive development in the region, reported OTS.
Another important project to revitalize Semmering was presented at the book presentation “Regular Guests: Jews at Semmering” in the Vienna Palais Lower Austria. In a moving setting, Mikl-Leitner explained that the book represents the beginning of a long journey to explore Semmering's past and keep it alive. Danielle Spera, the editor, sheds light on Jewish life in this important place and underlines its historical significance. Mikl-Leitner spoke out strongly in favor of promoting the culture of remembrance in order to learn from history, especially with regard to the dark chapters of National Socialism. Other initiatives will also be presented, such as the revitalization of former synagogues and memorial sites in order to honor the cultural diversity and importance of Jewish heritage in Lower Austria noe.gv.at explained in detail.
