Rising unemployment in Krems: challenges and opportunities on the labor market
The economic situation remains challenging in the third quarter. There is a noticeable decline in industry and construction, which also affects the labor market. Unemployment is rising in the Krems district at a time when many industries are looking for skilled workers. At the end of October 2024, 1,612 people had to report their unemployment to the AMS Krems, which corresponds to an increase of 13% compared to the previous year. Including participants in training programs, a total of 1,993 people were looking for employment.
The current estimate of the unemployment rate in Krems is 4.5%, which is 0.5 percentage points more than last year. However, compared to other regions such as Lower Austria (5.8%) and Austria as a whole (6.9%), Krems continues to perform better.
Strong range of placements
Despite the rising unemployment figures, there is an unexpected positive development: over 3,000 positions have already been successfully filled by the AMS Krems this year. The AMS Krems advisors made around 16,000 placement suggestions to citizens looking for work. In addition, 3,150 job seekers were able to end their unemployment with a new job. “We have a future-oriented offer for all of our clients – be it a job or a qualification,” emphasizes Erwin Kirschenhofer, the branch manager of the AMS Krems. Currently, 381 interested people are taking part in training courses to prepare for the requirements of the domestic labor market.
Despite the general economic difficulties, the AMS Krems is successful in combating long-term unemployment in the district. There is only an increase of one person or 0.5% in this area. Kirschenhofer highlights the importance of working closely with local companies and social partners to achieve positive results, while long-term unemployment in Lower Austria has increased by an average of 20.6%.
Although the number of vacancies at AMS Krems is currently 839, significantly lower than the previous year, the number still remains above the pre-crisis level. This shows that job seekers have numerous options available to them to find a new job and reintegrate into the labor market.
