Fatal accident in Spittal: car falls 50 meters into the Kremsbach!

On July 8, 2025, a tragic traffic accident occurred in the Spittal/Drau district in which a car left the road and fell around 50 meters over steep terrain into the Kremsbach. The accident happened around 5:50 p.m. on the L19 when the 49-year-old driver from the Zwettl district lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons in a sharp left curve. The car ended up badly damaged on the passenger side in the stream bed and the two occupants suffered fatal injuries. Tragically, the passenger was a 75-year-old woman from the Gmünd district. Any help came too late for both, as Gailtal Journal reports.

In the wake of the accident, a large contingent of rescue and emergency services was mobilized. Police patrols from PI Rennweg am Katschberg and PI Gmünd were on site, as were the police helicopter “Libelle” and the emergency medical helicopters RK1 and Christophorus 7. Several volunteer fire departments from Kremsbrücke, Innerkrems, Leoben and Eisentratten were also at the scene of the accident with many emergency vehicles and cooperated with the Lieser-Maltatal and Spittal/Drau mountain rescue services. Particularly noteworthy is the support of 32 river and white water rescuers from the Austrian water rescue service, three of whom were flown by police helicopter from Lake Faak to the scene of the accident, as My District reports.

Pandemic of traffic accidents

Accidents like this not only tear affected families apart, but also cast a shadow on road traffic in Austria. According to Statistik Austria, the recording of road traffic accidents with personal injuries and the daily transmission of relevant data are carried out by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. This system aims to continuously monitor accident events in order to provide reliable data for accident research and prevention. There is a clear need for action to reduce the number of accidents, particularly with regard to road safety.

The tragic circumstances of this accident make it clear how important preventative measures and safety precautions are in road traffic. The municipality and relevant authorities must take urgent measures to prevent such accidents in the future in order to protect the lives of road users.
