Margarete Tröstl, the oldest living person in Lower Austria, fell asleep peacefully on Friday morning in the Schrems nursing and care center. The news of her death comes just five and a half weeks before her 114th birthday on February 26th. According to the Lower Austrian State Health Agency (LGA), Tröstl was not only the oldest person in Austria, but was also listed as the oldest living person in the entire German-speaking region, as Wikipedia held on. She was born on February 26, 1911 in Gmünd and spent a youth that was heavily influenced by the First World War.

Her life story is impressive: After graduating from school, she worked as a travel assistant for many years and then worked for the Henkel Group for a long time. Tröstl married a carpenter and lived in Vienna until her retirement before returning to her home in the Waldviertel. At the age of 103, she moved to the care center in Schrems. Her last years were marked by visits from her son Horst and her niece Margarete Falkner. As the LGA said, her humor was one of the many facets that made her endearing. Tröstl often expressed her wish for hearty roast pork for her birthday and showed her faith right up to the end with the words “The Lord is watching over me”.

A life full of memories

Tröstl experienced numerous significant events in her long life, including several trips abroad and the return to her homeland. Her parents and family traditions played a big role in her life, and she continued to amaze people with the independence she maintained into old age. Her father lived to a respectable age of 104, reinforcing the family spirit of longevity. Margarete Tröstl's life story is valued as part of Austria's history and will remain unforgotten.
