Private jets in Austria: expensive flights, high emissions - is it really cheaper?

In recent years, the number of private jets registered in Austria has increased significantly. There are currently around 266, but many of these aircraft are abroad. This leads to growing criticism, in particular on the part of the environmental protection organization Greenpeace, which indicates the problem of environmental pollution. Despite the high prices for business class flights, it is argued that private jet flights can often be made cheaper, which some business travelers have now recognized.

An expert from Avconjet, Alexander Vagacs, underlines that the efficiency and legal certainty of Austrian airspace offer excellent conditions. While the corona crisis, when regular air traffic came to a standstill, it turned out that many users switched to private jets and retained this trend, as the flight expert Kurt Hoffmann reports.

cost analysis of private jets

Financial viewing of private jet flights shows that it can be cheaper for business people to charter a private jet than to buy several business class tickets. Hoffmann explains that five tickets in the business class are often more expensive than the charter of a private jet for five people.

Another interesting aspect is the tax deductibility of such flights. Greenpeace critic Stefan Stadler complains that private jet flights in Austria can be taxed as business trips, similar to train tickets. "We urgently need kerosene tax and a limitation of the deductible travel costs," says Stadler. In his opinion, environmentally friendly traffic options should be promoted and climate -damaging forms of mobility should be disadvantaged.

The environmentalists point out that private jets per passenger and kilometers represent the most climate -damaging form of travel. According to its calculations, a private jet causes up to 14 times more CO₂ emissions than a conventional transport aircraft and even 50 times more than one train.

This problem is increasingly being discussed within society, and political demands are also loud, such as the KPÖ, which strives for an intervention in private air traffic.

The debate about the use of private jets and its effects on the environment is clear that a comprehensive discussion is necessary to promote more environmentally friendly alternatives.
