Matthias Schrom is leaving ServusTV after only half a year!
Matthias Schrom is leaving ServusTV after only working as overall editorial director since November 2024. This step was announced on Monday during a staff meeting and is the result of different ideas about the future of the station. ServusTV has not yet commented on the change in management. General Manager Goetz Hoefer will temporarily take over program agendas.
The situation at ServusTV appears to be dynamic, especially since Schrom was seen as a possible successor to Ferdinand Wegscheider, who is also giving up his role as director. Schrom, who was responsible for the content management of all editorial departments as well as format further and new development during his short time at ServusTV, announced at the beginning of his term of office that he would take the next steps with the station.
History and resignation
Before Schrom moved to ServusTV, he was editor-in-chief of ORF 2 from 2018 to 2022. His resignation took place in autumn 2022 after a chat affair in which chats from 2019 revealed an exchange with FPÖ boss Heinz-Christian Strache about ORF reporting and personnel requests. He was then project manager for “Smart Producing” at ORF, where he has held various management positions since 1993.
After losing his editor-in-chief role, Schrom resigned from ORF in May 2022 and moved to ServusTV a short time later. The latest developments could be crucial for the channel as ServusTV recently achieved the best May market share in its history. Despite attractive sports rights and investments in feature film formats, it was not possible to overtake the ORF.
Outlook and current leadership
The departures at management level leave questions about the strategic direction of ServusTV unanswered. While Goetz Hoefer will now take responsibility for program design, Marlene Beran will take care of the commercial area. The broadcaster's future could depend heavily on the next steps in personnel policy, especially as the market is changing rapidly and strategic decisions are of central importance.
For anyone who would like to delve further into media management topics, the book “Introduction to Media Management: Basics, Strategy, Leadership, Personnel” by Thomas Breyer-Mayländer is recommended. It offers comprehensive insights into the challenges and strategies of the media industry.
In summary, it remains to be seen how ServusTV and its new leadership will respond to the challenges of the media landscape.
