Marterbauer shines: Finance Minister with the greatest trust in the government!
Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer from the SPÖ achieved the highest trust among government members in the latest version of the APA/OGM trust index. With a trust balance of plus four, he is behind Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who achieved the highest value overall at +19, but has lost five points since the last survey. Third National Council President Doris Bures follows closely behind with a balance of +18. These results were published on September 5, 2025 and are based on surveys conducted in late August and early September among 1,062 Austrians. The trust balance results from an evaluation of the positive and negative trust statements and can be viewed with a fluctuation range of three percentage points.
The survey shows that the SPÖ achieved good results overall, even if there were slight losses compared to the April survey. Vice Chancellor and party leader Andreas Babler, on the other hand, recorded a decline and is now, with a trust balance of minus 23, only one point above the new Green Party federal spokeswoman Leonore Gewessler, who scores at -24. Other government members such as National Council President Walter Rosenkranz (FPÖ) and the ÖVP club chairman August Wöginger also have to accept losses, with balance values of -27 and -31 respectively.
Losses and gains of trust
In the current survey, Herbert Kickl, the head of the FPÖ, is at the bottom with a balance of minus 38. However, he has recorded the largest increase in trust since April, with plus five points. On the other hand, Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) experienced a decline of three points with a balance of zero, which is three points below his value from April 2025. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner also gained three points each, while Integration Minister Claudia Plakolm gained four points.
The Neos experienced a collective collapse in confidence. Party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger has lost ten points to minus six. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr has even lost eleven points and is now at minus three, while Economics Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP) has also fallen to minus seven. State Secretary Josef Schellhorn experienced the most dramatic decline from plus five to minus 20. This is interpreted as an “amateurish stumble” over a larger company car.
Comments on the situation
OGM boss Wolfgang Bachmayer commented on Herbert Kickl's increase in confidence, which may have been aided by media reluctance. The results of the survey shed light on the political mood in Austria and show how trust in the various members of the government has developed. While the SPÖ did well overall, the losses among the Neos and other parties raise questions about the future political direction and voter trust.
The current situation illustrates how important citizens' trust in politics is, especially in real times when political decisions can have far-reaching consequences. The detailed results and further information about the surveys can be found on the website Dolomite town, vol.at and Statista.
