Lama Edie is looking for a home: Four-legged friend with behavioral problems needs help!
At the animal shelter in Vösendorf, a very special llama named Edie is causing a stir. The four-year-old splendid boy has exhibited very unusual behavior that puzzles the keepers. Edie doesn't like other llamas and shows noticeable aggressive behavior towards other llamas, which the animal shelter managers describe as extremely rare. Stephan Scheidl, the head of the animal shelter, confirms: “We have looked after many llamas, but none that are so atypical.” Edie even attacks other llamas and does not spit - a behavioral problem that could be due to inappropriate husbandry in the past. However, he appears peaceful towards people, which is a glimmer of hope for animal welfare experts.
Edie currently lives in a paddock in a mixed group of animals with calves, sheep and geese. This unusual coexistence could help him improve his social behavior. Tierschutz Austria, who took him in, are dealing openly with the problem and are now looking for a suitable owner who has the necessary experience and patience to help Edie find a stable home. “He needs an experienced pet owner with patience and expertise,” explains Scheidl and adds with a laugh: “There’s one thing you don’t have to be afraid of – being spit on by Edie!” In fact, llamas usually become aggressive to establish their hierarchy within the group, but Edie's behavior is a notable exception that presents a fascinating challenge, especially for the keepers. More detailed information about Edie's situation and the search for a new home can be found at krone.at and ots.at.
