economic effects of cancer
The economic burdens from cancer in Austria amount to the millions. Every year there were around 65,000 hospitalizations with a total of 388,000 hospital stays every year for four types of cancer-intestinal, prostate, breast and cervical cancer. According to a study carried out, the costs for these hospitalization are around 510 million euros without taking into account the difficult to calculate medication costs. Andrea Pitzschke from the Economica Institute for Economic Research emphasized the social responsibility of prevention to reduce these financial burdens.
Early detection plays a crucial role because it can help to slow down the course of cancer and reduce costs in the long term. There, epidemiological data are collected, evaluated and made available to the audience.
