Carinthia's cycle paths: Two million euros for faster expansion

In an important decision, the Carinthian state government has approved a special budget of two million euros for the expansion of cycle paths. The aim of this initiative is to promote supra-regional cycling projects, which often come to a standstill due to the need for financial co-financing from the municipalities. This presents municipalities with major financial challenges, and this additional financing is intended to bridge the gap.

"The additional funds enable us to relieve the municipalities of the financial burden. This means we can implement the cycle path projects that are important for the regions more quickly," explained Martin Gruber, the road construction officer and deputy governor of Carinthia.

Priority for the Drau cycle path

The funds provided are intended to flow specifically into various nationwide projects that are to be implemented or planned in 2024. A central project is the Drau cycle path, which needs extensive renovation. According to tourism officer and state councilor Sebastian Schuschnig, 1.2 million euros of the special budget alone will flow into this project, which will be carried out in stages.

This special budget also forms the basis for the planned pre-season offensive in 2025. Schuschnig emphasized that there is great potential in the area of cycle tourism, especially in the pre- and post-season, which we would like to exploit. 250,000 euros should be made available in 2025 to strengthen the pre-season.
