Haltern delegation celebrates partnership at St. Veiter Wiesenmarkt

An exciting exchange recently took place in the town of Haltern am See with the Austrian twin town of St. Veit. The occasion was the Wiesenmarkt, an impressive folk festival that has now been celebrated for the 661st time. From September 27th to 30th, a ten-person delegation made its way to Carinthia to experience this cultural event.

The invitation came from Martin Kulmer, the mayor of St. Veit. The guests from Haltern took part in the parade to open the Wiesenmarkt, where more than 60 groups ceremoniously presented Carinthia's cultural heritage. "The participation of our partner city shows how lively our partnership is. This is living solidarity," said Kulmer during the celebrations. Andreas Stegemann, the mayor of Haltern, expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality and valuable insights the delegation received.

Visit and experiences

It wasn't just the Wiesenmarkt that was on the program. The Haltern delegation also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition “800 Years of the City of St. Veit an der Glan” in the town hall. This informative show highlights the origins of St. Veit as an urban center in the historic Duchy of Carinthia. A particular focus was on the important role of the railway in the city's history, which particularly interested the guests. The most impressive attraction was the world's only driving simulator of a railcar, which many people tried out with enthusiasm.

After a break due to Corona, the town twinning between Haltern am See and St. Veit has gained momentum again. In 2022, both cities celebrated the 50th anniversary of their partnership with a large shooting parade in St. Veit. This was followed by a return visit to the shooting festival in Haltern in 2023. It is clear that both sides want to continue to deepen the exchange and partnership in the future. The initiatives and visits to both cities help keep the historical connection alive.
