Carinthia starts the digital revolution: AI KärntenGPT” inspires!

Today, April 11, 2025, the first official visit of the new State Secretary for Digitalization, Alexander Pröll, took place in Carinthia. As part of this visit, Governor Peter Kaiser presented the state's progress and digital change, in particular the central project “KärntenGPT”. This artificial intelligence is already used by over 1,000 state employees and is intended to revolutionize administrative work in the Carinthian state service. According to a presentation by the state CIO Christian Inzko, to date over 32,000 inquiries have been made, more than 5,400 conversations have been held and over 1,100 files have been uploaded.

The main aim of digitalization in Carinthia is to serve people, support administrative staff and simplify processes. The focus is on transparent communication with the population. At the same time, strict adherence to data protection and ethical standards is emphasized. State Secretary Pröll praised the innovative spirit in Carinthia and the comprehensive approach to digitalization. Governor Kaiser offered Pröll his full support to establish Carinthia as a model region and to work together to make Austria digitally fit for the future.

Artificial intelligence in administration

The introduction of KärntenGPT comes at a time when the digital transformation of administration has accelerated. This was made possible by the new generation of artificial intelligence, which has been in use since autumn 2022. The recently published practical guide to artificial intelligence in administration offers crucial support for employees in the public sector. In addition to an in-depth treatment of the opportunities and challenges of AI, ethical issues, technical principles and legal frameworks are also discussed. The guide includes practical tools such as a decision tree and a checklist for the ethical use of AI.

For public administration to keep pace with technological advances, it is important that institutions leverage the benefits of digitalization. The aim is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of administrative work for citizens while protecting their rights. Section III-Public Service and Administrative Innovation supports the public sector in driving digital transformation while maintaining ethical standards.
