Insolvency shock: Alpine Family” hotel group in debt with 17 million euros!

The hotel operating company “Alpine Family” has filed for bankruptcy at the Vienna Commercial Court. The Dutch company AlpinFamily GmbH, which runs the hotel brands “AvenidA” and “Alpin Rentals”, among others, recorded debts of 17 million euros. This step affects around 135 creditors and 73 employees who work in operations at ten locations in Salzburg, Tyrol and Upper Austria.

The company's headquarters are in Vienna, and despite the bankruptcy, AlpinFamily GmbH plans to continue operations. In order to make these measures possible, comprehensive restructuring is planned. Salary payments to employees are secured during the process and operations continue without restrictions.

Establishes causes of bankruptcy

In recent years, the company has invested in its team and IT structures, but the integration of new operations has been slower than intended. In addition, liquidity bottlenecks due to increased personnel costs, inflation and general price increases have put a strain on the company's financial situation. Another factor was the noticeable decline in room nights, which occurred during a period described as an “unexpectedly weak winter”.

AlpinFamily GmbH plans to offer its creditors a refund of 20 percent of the debt, payable within two years. In the insolvency proceedings, 14 property shares must also be taken into account, the value of which must be determined during the course of the proceedings.

Economic context

The insolvency of “Alpine Family” is part of a broader trend within the Austrian economy. According to business news, preliminary liabilities rose to a total of 2.04 billion euros in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 6.9 percent compared to the previous year. A significant portion of this insolvency volume comes from the Signa conglomerate, which recorded 479 million euros in insolvency volume with Signa Prime CM 2017 GmbH alone.

Although there is a positive trend in personal bankruptcies - a decrease of 8.7 percent - the insolvency figures are a sign of continued economic pressure, particularly on certain sectors. Experts warn of a lack of economic policy support that would be necessary to achieve a rapid improvement in the overall situation. There were dramatic declines in particular in the federal states of Styria, Carinthia and Upper Austria.

In this tense economic environment, the bankruptcy of “Alpine Family” highlights the challenges that many companies face. The ongoing uncertainty will continue to pose a major challenge for many players in the industry.
