Guantanamo Bay: US prepares for massive reception of migrants!

A dramatic development at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay: According to the Pentagons Ten migrants classified as “highly dangerous” arrived there today. These people, members of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, are now to be held in the controversial prison camp until they can be returned to their countries of origin or find other suitable accommodation. There are plans to accommodate up to 30,000 migrants in Guantanamo Bay, as US President Trump has ordered.

Massive preparations in Guantanamo

Latest satellite images, as from The New York Times reports show that around 150 tents have been erected to provide migrant shelter and support operations. Most migrants are expected to be housed in the western area of the bay, about seven miles from the prison holding terrorism suspects. However, the first ten migrants are currently housed in the high-security area.
These preparations to receive migrants are part of a broader strategy to expand the base's capacity, as only a small number of migrants were held there in previous years. Plans from 2016 show the area could accommodate up to 13,000 migrants and 5,000 support staff in an emergency.

Activity at Guantanamo has increased significantly in recent weeks. At the end of January, the Navy ship U.S.S. St. Louis to support the construction of the tent city. As of Wednesday, more than 80 tents had been set up for the support operations. It remains to be seen how many migrants will ultimately be held at Guantanamo and what conditions they will face there.
