Fee shock: Passport & driving license more expensive from July 2025!
From July 1, 2025, citizens in Austria must expect significant price increases for various federal documents. The cost of passports, ID cards and driving licenses is increasing by almost 50 percent. This measure was announced as part of a wider government austerity drive as fees have not been adjusted since 2011. The Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club (ÖAMTC) recommends submitting applications for these documents in June 2025 in order to save significant costs.
The new fees are as follows:
| document | New price (Euro) | Previous price (Euro) |
|---|---|---|
| passport | 112 | 75.90 |
| ID card | 91 | 61.50 |
| Driver's license | 90 | 60.50 |
| Vehicle registration | 270 | 178 |
| Name change | 567 | – |
| citizenship | 1,448 (award), 163 (application) | – |
| Weapon passport | 175 | – |
| Gun ownership card | 110 | – |
| Marriage | 74 | 50 |
Reasons for the increase
The drastic increase in fees of 48.2 percent is aimed at covering ongoing administrative costs. This move should not be seen in isolation, but rather as part of a broader discussion about the need for fees in the public sector. Administrative costs include fees and expenses charged for specific public administration activities. Without these fees, the general tax burden for citizens would have to increase, which is a key goal of fee regulation in order to raise public awareness of the costs of state services, reports mf.niedersachsen.de.
While the new fees seem high at first glance, there are also voices calling for certain fees to be abolished. The ÖAMTC emphasizes that the vehicle registration fee is unnecessary because there is no adequate compensation and the processes could be increasingly automated.
Practical information on how to apply
Citizens should not limit themselves to the authorities responsible for their community. Applications for passports and driving licenses can be submitted nationwide, which is particularly advantageous in urban areas with long waiting times. According to ÖAMTC, savings of up to 36 euros per document can be achieved if applications are submitted by the end of June 2025.
The upcoming changes highlight the need to check your documents in a timely manner and, if necessary, submit applications in order to avoid increasing fees.
