Stunning in Vienna: Schieder exposes anti-Serbian prejudices!
Tensions between Austria and Serbia are increasing after SPÖ politician Andreas Schieder discussed an alleged act of violence against Serbian opposition politician Dragan D̵ilas. Harald Vilimsky, head of the FPÖ delegation in the European Parliament, described Schieder's statements as “pure misinformation”. A video released by the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, Ana Brnabić, shows that D̵ilas himself made aggressive provocations towards young people who simply wanted to hang up posters. Vilimsky demands an immediate apology from Schieder and a clear distancing from his false allegations. These incidents are seen as deliberate anti-Serb propaganda, which is not in the interests of the over 300,000 Serbs in Austria and endangers peaceful coexistence, Vilimsky continued.
State power against opposition
While political tensions are emerging in the Austrian region, the situation in Serbia continues to escalate. After an accident with several fatalities and weeks of protests, the confrontation has become manifest in the Serbian parliament. Schieder spoke clearly and described the escalation as “state violence in its worst form”. He emphasized that the remaining political rights of the opposition were being systematically curtailed. The aggressive policies of the government under Aleksandar Vučić, denounced by Schieder, mean that Serbia's path towards a democratic and European future is becoming a long way off Cosmo reported.
Accordingly, the impression is increasingly being given in Serbia that it is more of a dictatorship than a democracy. Schieder calls for the attention of European partners, who should critically monitor developments in Serbia in order to prevent the country from drifting further into authoritarian structures. The situation in Serbia remains tense as pressure increases on the country's European membership aspirations.
