Drug gang in southern Burgenland: Police strike and secure drugs

In southern Burgenland, the police have busted a drug gang that is said to have earned over 220,000 euros from trafficking in addictive substances. The arrests were announced on Wednesday. The focus of the investigation is a 41-year-old man from the Güssing district who is considered the leader of the group. In addition to him, three other people were arrested: a 35-year-old man from Lower Austria, a 27-year-old and a 68-year-old, both from the Oberwart district. In total, more than ten adults and two young people were reported who were suspected of dealing drugs.

The gang was active in several regions, particularly in the districts of Oberwart, Güssing and Jennersdorf, as well as in neighboring Eastern Styria. According to the state police department, the main suspect was proven to have sold addictive substances worth over 175,000 euros. A search of his home revealed cocaine, cannabis and cash. The police stated that the main suspect was said to have sold drugs at a construction site on the S7 as early as 2021. The investigation was sparked by information from a drug user who gave a statement last January.

Investigations and seizures

When the 27-year-old's house was searched, the officers not only found various drugs, but also long guns and a non-functional bazooka from the Second World War. The 68-year-old suspect from Oberwart also had long guns and ammunition in his possession. Drugs as well as handguns and long weapons were also found on the 35-year-old from Lower Austria.

These events shed light on the drug problem in the region, which is highlighted by the activity of such groups. The police have announced that they will carry out further investigations into this matter in order to further dismantle the drug milieu and also bring other possible participants to account.
