Carnival start in Güssing: key handover is canceled this year!
EAn unexpected event has clouded the anticipation of the carnival in Güssing. Normally, the beginning of the foolish time is celebrated on November 11th at 11:11 a.m. with a ceremonial handover of the Golden City Key by Mayor Vinzenz Knor to the carnival guild. But this year the key to the town hall remained unhanded because the carnival guild is struggling with serious personnel problems.
In the district capital, it has been a tradition for decades that the new carnival prince couple is presented and the community gets in the mood for the beginning of the carnival season. This time, however, everything was different. Johannes Hofbauer, the chairman of the Güssing carnival guild, explained: “The handover of keys will no longer be necessary and unfortunately the big carnival parade on Shrove Tuesday also has to be canceled.” This is an unfortunate circumstance, but Hofbauer described the situation as unavoidable due to several staff absences, which led to a significant staff shortage in the club.
Reasons for the cancellations
Carnival often represents a time of revelry and festive activities, but the real challenges behind the scenes are not always visible. The impressive events that attract many visitors require the participation of a dedicated team. This year, a number of unforeseen circumstances became apparent, which meant that the Güssing Carnival Guild was unable to guarantee the usual celebration.
The cancellation of the traditional procession and the handover of keys does not just mean a short suspension of the celebrations. It is a clear indication of the difficulties that many local communities are experiencing at the current time. The anticipation of the carnival season is strong in Güssing. Many citizens look forward to the events with excitement every year. These sudden changes cast a shadow over what would otherwise have been a carefree time.
Despite the setback, hope remains that the carnival guild can revive its traditions again in the future. It remains to be seen how the low capacities and structural challenges can be overcome. The community is invited to support the members during this time in order to look for solutions together and perhaps celebrate carnival all the more happily next year.
The decision to cancel the events has already sparked some discussion in the region. Many questions remain unanswered, and the Güssing Carnival Guild will from now on try to find ways to keep the tradition alive, even if the circumstances speak against them. The people responsible for planning hope that the situation will recover soon and are striving to respond actively and creatively to the needs of the population again in the future.
