Brignone is crowned giant slalom queen – ÖSV with mixed feelings!

Italian alpine skier Federica Brignone secured her third World Cup title of the season in the Sun Valley giant slalom. Brignone, who has already won the crystal globes for the overall World Cup and downhill, was able to win the crystal globe in the giant slalom with her second place in the final race. This meant she won her second glass trophy after 2020. Lara Gut-Behrami, who won the race, was 14 hundredths of a second ahead of the Italian. Brignone once again proved that she is one of the best giant slalom riders by setting the fastest time in the second round.

In this race, New Zealand alpine skier Alice Robinson was eliminated in the first round after starting with a 20-point lead. Her emotional exit at the finish was a bitter setback for her. Third place went to Sara Hector of Sweden, who finished 0.80 seconds behind Brignone, while Thea Louise Stjernesund took fourth place, 2.30 seconds behind the winner.

Austrian athletes and the end of the season

Stephanie Brunner was the only Austrian to reach the second round, moving from 17th to 10th, 4.80 seconds behind. This is her best result of the season. Katharina Liensberger was eliminated shortly before the finish in the first round. Her teammate Julia Scheib stayed away from this race due to illness, which ÖSV head coach Roland Assinger described as a “heap of misery”. Scheib was previously one of Austria's best giant slalom runners and is currently in ninth place in the giant slalom World Cup.

The season is coming to an end and the final women's event will be a slalom on Thursday. As third overall, Liensberger still has a chance of a crystal ball, while the competition for the overall World Cup remains exciting.

Overall title and historical perspective

With her victory in the giant slalom, Brignone solidified her dominance this competition season. In the overall ranking, in addition to the overall World Cup and downhill titles, she also leads the crystal ball in giant slalom. It therefore occupies a prominent place in the list of winning titles in recent years. Laola1 reports on the winners of recent years, and it becomes clear that with her third title and her consistent performance, Brignone occupies an important place in the history of alpine skiing.
