Young winger Jed Drew, who plays for Macarthur FC in the A-League Men, recently completed a move to TSV Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga. The 21-year-old athlete has scored six goals and provided seven assists in 13 games this season. This is an important step in his career, while at the same time focusing on the challenges ahead with the Socceroos. Macarthur confirmed his departure on Thursday and the transfer fee remained unknown. Drew was positive about his time at Macarthur and thanked him for the opportunity he was given.

Part of a group of emerging talent, Drew is not the only Australian player active in Europe. The others include Marco Tilio (Celtic), Garang Kuol (Newcastle) and Nestory Irankunda (FC Bayern). Despite the strong competition in the Australian national team, Drew has ambitious goals as he plans to make the Socceroos' squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Challenges and ambitions

Drew made his debut for the U23 national team at the end of March. He is working purposefully to draw attention to himself through outstanding performance over the next 12 to 18 months. The support of his family, especially that of his father, who watches almost every game, is important to Drew. However, the time difference from 5pm in Austria to 1am in Sydney will make it difficult for his family to watch the games live.

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic is keeping an eye on Drew's performances as he reviews the squad for World Cup qualifiers against Indonesia and China in March. Drew could play a role in a talented group of players such as Mat Ryan, who could potentially win his 97th and 98th caps. There are a total of six uncapped players in the squad, with Australia in second place in Group C. The upcoming games are crucial to maintain the chance of the second automatic ticket to the finals behind leaders Japan.

The Socceroos must be prepared to rise to the pressure and win both games to keep their World Cup dreams alive. The team is supported by the strong performance of Drew and other talented players who are looking to fulfill their potential. Drew himself is convinced that the current group of players is the best he has ever played with and hopes for a successful future both at club and national team level.
