Shock for ski superstar: Mikaela Shiffrin injured after fall!
Ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin was seriously injured in a serious fall during the Killington giant slalom on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Just a few gates away from the finish, where she was about to celebrate her 100th World Cup victory, Shiffrin fell and crashed through several gates into the sidewall. The 29-year-old had to spend over 20 minutes on the route before the ski patrol could take her away on a toboggan run. Fortunately, medical examination later showed that no ligaments or bones were injured, but Shiffrin still suffered several bruises and a deep wound on her stomach, like krone.at reported.
“I literally have a stab wound and pretty severe muscle trauma to my entire right area,” Shiffrin announced via social media. Despite the serious injury, she feels “very lucky not to have been injured worse.” Her statement came immediately after the mishap, which represents a major setback for the leader of the all-time World Cup victories rankings. She is expected to need “at least a few weeks” to get fit again before she can hit the slopes again. However, the next event, planned at Mont Tremblant in Canada, was canceled due to a lack of snow, potentially giving her a short break from competition, as boston.com reported.
About the injuries
Shiffrin describes her injuries as a “weird injury.” She admitted that she was “not entirely sure” how the puncture occurred, but suspects it happened when she collided with a goal. "It's a hole that goes through my obliques and there's severe muscle bruising on top of that," she explained. She is realistic about her return to the slopes, stating, "I want to be optimistic, but I don't think I can compete in Beaver Creek." When asked when she might return, she highlighted that injuries of this nature often require a longer period of healing.
