Berlusconi's heirs sell AC Monza: a new chapter begins!
The family of Silvio Berlusconi, who died in June 2023, is withdrawing from the football business with the sale of the AC Monza football club. The contract for the transfer of shares was signed in Milan on July 1, 2025. British investment fund Beckett Layne Ventures (BLV) has taken an 80 percent stake in AC Monza, with the remaining 20 percent to be liquidated by June 2026. The total value of the deal is 45 million euros, as reported by Italian media. This transaction marks the final departure of the Berlusconi family from the world of football.
In his life's work, Silvio Berlusconi was not only four times Italian Prime Minister, but also President of AC Milan, one of the most famous clubs in the world, for over 30 years. The Berlusconi family took over AC Monza in 2018 and promoted this club to Serie A for the first time in 2022. After a disappointing performance last season, in which Monza finished bottom of the table with just three wins from 38 games, the club is now looking towards a future in Serie B.
New owner with experience
US fund Beckett Layne Ventures is new to the football business, but has already invested over $10 billion in various media and entertainment sectors. The founders, Brandon Berger and Lauren Crampsie, previously helped restructure Chelsea's commercial division. Monza is considered by BLV to be a strategically important location, particularly due to its proximity to Milan, less than 30 kilometers away.
The sale of Monza highlights a larger trend of foreign investment in Italian football, particularly in Serie A. The number of clubs under foreign control has increased from seven to 11, an increase of 55 percent. Other US-owned clubs include traditional clubs such as AC Milan and Inter Milan, which underlines the attractiveness of Italian football for investors.
Foreign investment in football
The explanation for the increase in foreign investment is based on various factors, including the history, fan base and growth potential of Italian football. Clubs like Atalanta B.C. and Fiorentina are further examples of international capital inflows. But these changes also bring challenges, such as the need to find a balance between international talent and local player development.
With the sale of AC Monza by the Berlusconi family, the era of one of the most famous faces in Italian football will come to an end and the image of Serie A will continue to change. It remains to be seen how the club will develop under new management and whether it can build on its previous successes in the second division. Whether the new ownership can set the course for a promising future is one of the big questions that will accompany the next season.
