Christmas in the shadow of homelessness: Caritas helps those affected!
The Christmas season will be a special challenge for many people, especially for the residents of the Caritas Noah House in Vienna. After a devastating underground car park fire on December 1st, which made the house uninhabitable, 113 formerly homeless men and women had to move to various emergency accommodations. The damage to water and power lines has meant that the house will probably be closed for six months. "The shock was great. Luckily no one was injured," explained Caritas director Klaus Schwertner about the current situation of those affected, who now had to leave their belongings behind COURIER reported.
In order to give the people who have lost everything a feeling of community and security, Caritas is preparing a festive Christmas. In the replacement quarters, Christmas trees should be set up, games organized and special Christmas meals prepared. The aim is to help residents forget the difficult circumstances over the holidays. “We had to leave everything behind,” said Caritas, which urgently needs donations. In addition to financial support, donations in kind such as warm clothing, hygiene products and non-perishable food are also needed. There are drop-off points available in many places in the city, such as this one CAPE reported.
