KPÖ wants to introduce public kitchens in Vienna to combat high food prices
The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) has decided to take active action against rising food prices in Vienna. At a press conference on the upcoming Vienna election, federal spokesman Tobias Schweiger called for the establishment of public kitchens. The aim is to offer the citizens of Vienna inexpensive, freshly cooked meals made from regional products. These public kitchens should be set up in busy places in the city so that the offerings are accessible to everyone. The top candidate Barbara Urbanic supports the initiative and calls for government intervention, including a price cap on basic foods. Urbanic highlights that the cheapest food has increased by ten percent since last year.
In order to draw attention to the problem, the KPÖ organized an action with a pizza truck on Karlsplatz. Further stations in the Meidling and Ottakring districts are already planned. The number of public kitchens is to be determined in the coming legislative period in order to ensure nationwide supply.
Monuments and places of remembrance
LINKS is committed to remembrance work that reflects progressive, feminist and democratic values. Sheri Avraham from LINKS sees the Lueger monument as a remnant of the era of Nazi ideology in Austria. Although LINKS does not yet have any concrete proposals for the design of the square, they are considering a larger statue of Johanna Dohnal to honor her political contribution.
EU initiatives to combat poverty
The European Platform against Poverty and Social Exclusion was founded in 2010 to create a framework for solidarity action within the EU. In this context, the European Parliament has also adopted resolutions calling for robust social systems and European unemployment reinsurance to counter the challenges of social inequality.
