Brignone triumphs in the giant slalom: the ÖSV team clearly embarrasses itself!

Federica Brignone triumphed in the giant slalom competition at the World Ski Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm and became the first Italian world champion in this discipline since 1996. With an impressive time, she beat New Zealand's Alice Robinson by 0.90 seconds and American Paula Moltzan by 2.62 seconds. The Austrian national ski team was unable to shine in this challenge; the best athlete, Katharina Liensberger, took twelfth place, 4.55 seconds behind vol.at reported.

The disillusionment of the local athletes was evident after the first round. Julia Scheib, who had started promisingly, fell on the finish slope on the way to a best time and caused additional nervousness in the Austrian team. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, even if some athletes, like Stephanie Brunner, were significantly behind. “If I'm five seconds behind, I don't have to look for anything anymore,” said Brunner, disappointed. Katharina Liensberger also said that she found the atmosphere in the stadium to be positive despite the failures and was looking forward to the coming races sn.at added.

Austria's medal record and challenges

The Austrian ski women continue to struggle with a difficult situation after falling to fourth place in the medal table after two medal-less races. The team had previously won gold in the Super-G and bronze in the team combination, which should keep their hopes high. Brignone, on the other hand, crowns her fantastic career with this victory and shows that at 34 years old she is still one of the best.
