EU Commission: Controversial proposal endangers human rights and climate!
On February 26, 2025, the EU Commission presented the controversial proposal for the so-called omnibus regulation. How South wind reports, this proposal is seen as an attempt to destabilize powerful laws, particularly the essential supply chain law. The plans include, among other things, a postponement of the application of the law by one year. Critics warn that this jeopardizes an important opportunity to protect human rights and the environment.
“The EU Commission is taking a risk that undermines its own Green Deal,” said Stefan Grasgruber-Kerl from Südwind. This deregulation could have devastating consequences for the protection of human rights and the environment. Bettina Rosenberger, Managing Director of the Social Responsibility Network, agreed with this assessment: “Without binding rules and the opportunity for those affected to demand redress, the Supply Chain Act remains ineffective.” The fears about the regulation also affect the existing and future reporting obligations in the area of sustainability, which, according to Ursula von der Leyen's announcement, are to be summarized in an omnibus regulation German Institute for Human Rights reported.
Concern about regression
The National Human Rights Institutions and other organizations warn that this omnibus regulation could bring laborious European legislation, such as the Supply Chain Directive, up for negotiation again. There is a demand that the EU Commission should urgently develop clear guidelines for implementation instead of renegotiations. This is the only way to sustainably ensure the implementation of human rights protection standards in global supply chains.
The urgency of this issue is emphasized by strengthening basic European values, which should act as a basis for the protection of human rights and against the dismantling of social standards. In these turbulent times of deregulation, it is crucial not to sacrifice the protection of human dignity, the environment and social standards to economic pressure.
