700 Berliners change gender entry: A new path to identity!
As part of the new self-determination law, which came into force on November 1st, around 700 Berliners have already changed their gender information. Surprisingly, the largest number of changes came not from the expected districts such as Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, but from Neukölln and Mitte. Here 115 or 104 gender entries were certified, like this Berlin courier reported. This law enables transgender, intersex and non-binary people to change their records with a simple declaration, without the previous costs and bureaucratic hurdles.
Changes to the registry office
An important point of the law is that in order to change their gender, the affected persons must also change their first name, unless the old first name matches the new gender entry. This particularly applies to minors, for whom legal representatives must give their consent. For example, people under the age of 14 are not allowed to submit the declaration to the registry office themselves. The Berlin Senate has already counted more than 1,600 registrations, which represents an increase from the 1,200 registrations before the law came into force.
The Neukölln registry office has two wedding rooms that can be used for marriages. One of the rooms is a former chapel, which offers a celebratory atmosphere. The other is a modern, light-filled room that was created from a former hospital room. This demonstrates the city's efforts to not only meet the needs of trans and non-binary people, but also to provide a comfortable environment for all citizens during important life events, such as the act of marriage. Loud Berlin.de The wedding ceremonies can take place both in the chapel and in a modern room with musical accompaniment as well as in a celebratory setting, which corresponds to the new possibilities for individualization.
