Tool theft in Micheldorf: Who knows the perpetrator? Police are looking for witnesses!

On May 16, 2025, a serious theft of tools was reported in Micheldorf in the St. Veit an der Glan district. Unknown perpetrators stole several high-quality tools from an unlocked vehicle in a parking lot. The stolen items include various Hilti tools, batteries, an angle grinder, a combination hammer drill and a reciprocating saw. The total value of the stolen material amounts to several thousand euros. The police investigation is ongoing, but so far there is no trace of the perpetrator. Witnesses are asked to contact the nearest police station to provide information that could help solve the crime.

The current increase in crimes in Austria casts a further shadow over this incident. According to Statista, around 528,000 crimes were reported in 2023, which is the highest level since 2016. More than a third of these crimes occurred in Vienna alone. Particularly alarming is the rise in white-collar crime and drug-related crimes, which are also trending upwards.

Increasing crime in Austria

The data collected by the police shows that around 85,400 so-called “highly publicized offenses” were registered in 2023, the highest figure since data collection began. This development comes at a time when 70% of the Austrian population believe that immigrants exacerbate crime problems. This underlines the complex relationship between social developments and crime.

In addition, the statistics show that around 35,400 drug offenses were reported in 2023, which represents an increase compared to the previous year. The most common substance abuse involves cannabis. In contrast, more than half of Austrians (50%) call for the legalization of cannabis, which represents another aspect of polarizing discussions in society.

The police clearance rate was 52.3% in 2023, which shows a slight increase compared to the previous year. This indicates improved police efficiency, while at the same time trust in law enforcement stands at 77%, according to a survey from spring 2024. These numbers reflect the tension in which Austrian society finds itself in relation to crime and law enforcement.
