Austria launches revolutionary one-way deposit: This is how it works!

A groundbreaking single-use deposit system will be introduced in Austria from January 1, 2025, which is intended to revolutionize the collection of plastic bottles and beverage cans. This system aims to significantly increase the response rate and achieve the ambitious EU targets of 90 percent by 2029 by 2027. According to a survey, 82 percent of the population already supports this measure, which underlines the strong desire for sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions meinkreis.at reported.

The newly introduced system stipulates that plastic bottles and cans will be subject to a deposit of 25 cents per unit, with the deposit being calculated at the time of purchase and refunded when the empty packaging is returned. The goal is to recycle around 2.2 billion bottles and cans every year and thus sustainably reduce the burden on the environment. Producers also benefit as they have the opportunity to buy back the recycled material to make new products, further strengthening the circular economy. Again Styria Waste Management Association explained, the broad support of the population shows that many are of the opinion that an effective deposit system will also reduce littering, i.e. the careless throwing away of waste.

Changes for consumers

With the introduction of the deposit system, consumers will have to ensure that their packaging bears the appropriate labels from 2025. Only bottles and cans with the Austrian deposit logo and barcode can be returned for the deposit. However, glass bottles and certain liquids such as dairy products are excluded. The entire campaign aims to change the population's recycling behavior and ensure the sustainable use of raw materials.

While there is already a great deal of acceptance for the deposit system before its official launch, one thing is clear: Austria is taking an important step towards a more environmentally friendly future that benefits both nature and society.
