Violence prevention in Leibnitz: Language as the key to change!
An insightful panel discussion on the topic of domestic violence recently took place in the “Kompetenz Living Room” in Leibnitz, organized by the Freiraum association and the Leibnitz Men's Table as part of the 16 Days Without Violence campaign. Significant questions were raised about patriarchal violence and its deep roots in society. Experts such as the feminist and psychotherapist Rotraud A. Perner emphasized that violence is not only physical but also verbal and is often trivialized. In her urgent appeal, Perner called for more attention to language, as it could indirectly promote violence. The police also reported on their experiences and the necessary measures to improve the situation for those affected.
Complex forms of violence and their causes
According to an analysis by bpb.de Violence is viewed as a multifaceted phenomenon that can manifest itself over decades or in brief moments. Violence can occur both in the form of verbal conflicts within families and in military conflicts that affect entire nations. The discussion about violence has become increasingly important in recent years, particularly with regard to its socio-cultural roots and the role of victims and perpetrators. This makes it clear that violence is not only caused by individual actions, but is also promoted by social structures and norms. Violence against women and children in particular remains an urgent problem that is still deeply rooted in social ideas.
The discussants emphasized that for effective prevention it is essential to both question language and break through stereotypical thought patterns. Measures such as community policing were deemed necessary to ensure immediate support and safety for potential victims. “We need encouragement to look and provide help,” said Perner. Such initiatives are important to raise awareness of forms of violence and to create space for those affected.
