Hertha Wels celebrates: promotion to the ADMIRAL 2nd league is perfect!

May 17, 2025 was an important day for FC Hertha Wels, which was promoted from the Regionalliga Mitte to the ADMIRAL 2nd League. The club, which was created in 2024 through the merger of WSC Hertha Wels and FC Wels, was able to celebrate this remarkable success with a 2-1 win against the Rieder secondary team. The goals for Wels were scored by Bosnjak in the 20th minute and Mesa in the 38th minute. The next goal for the young Vikings came in stoppage time in the first half through Zotter (45th + 1 minute).

Thanks to the simultaneous defeat of Union Gurten, who lost 1:3 against WAC II, FC Hertha Wels is now nine points clear at the top of the table with three rounds to go before the end of the season and can no longer be pushed out of first place. This makes FC Hertha Wels the first club from Austria's eighth largest city to play in one of the top two leagues again since 1998.

Current developments in the Central Regional League

The Regionalliga Mitte, which is considered the highest amateur league in Austria and plays an important role in the country's football league system, offers both promotion and relegation options. The champion of the Central and East regional leagues is promoted directly to the 2nd league. Meanwhile, SV Wildon is fighting in the relegation battle and was able to achieve a 2-2 draw against ASKÖ Oedt. Zorko scored a penalty in the 50th minute, while Kancilija equalized in the 90th minute.

FC Gleisdorf 09 secured relegation with a 5-3 win against ten Deutschlandsbergers, with Toni Barisic scoring three times (18th/63rd/89th minute). At the same time, some clubs in the league had to apply for their license or were forced not to receive one, which further complicated the competitive situation.

Overview of the football league system in Austria

The Austrian football league system is extensive and complex. It clearly comprises eight, including the top division, the Admiral Bundesliga, as well as the 2nd league and a three-tier regional league. In the 2022/23 season, around 3,200 teams were active in 269 leagues, with the leagues being organized by the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and the regional associations. The relegated team from the 2nd league will be replaced by the first place team in the regional league, which underlines the importance of the regional league as the highest amateur class. The number of relegations from the regional league varies depending on the number of teams in the 2nd league and in the regional league itself, which creates additional dynamics.

Overall, it is clear that FC Hertha Wels' promotion to the ADMIRAL 2nd league is not only a success for the club, but also a significant step for the city of Wels and regional football. The dynamics in the regional league and the structure of the league system offer exciting perspectives for the coming seasons.
