Vienna relies on climate-neutral heating systems: Roots Haus” as a role model!
An impressive project in Vienna-Penzing shows how the heating transition can be successfully advanced in the city. An office building from the 1970s on Linzer Straße is currently being extensively renovated and will serve as a showcase for emission-free heat supply in the future. The so-called “Roots House” will be equipped with an innovative brine heat system that uses renewable heat sources such as solar thermal energy and heat pumps. This enables efficient and cost-effective heating of all floors. Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) emphasizes the importance of this project, which not only serves research, but also shows how the switch from fossil fuels to sustainable heating systems in existing buildings can be successful, they report meinkreis.at.
In Linz, however, the focus is on the non-profit developers who are responsible for the renovation of the city's housing stock. GWG, the largest non-profit property developer in Linz, is investing 21 million euros in modernizing its buildings this year. This includes projects such as facade renovations, the installation of lifts and the connection to the district heating network, which supplies over 80,000 apartments in the city. The Neue Heimat is donating 19.1 million euros to improve the quality of living and thus shows how important sustainability and modernization are in urban development, as can be seen from the information service of the city of Linz ( linz.at ). The city has set itself the ambitious goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040, for which the energy-efficient renovation of the old buildings is essential.
Innovative measures to improve the quality of life
In both Vienna and Linz, the renovation of existing buildings is being promoted using innovative technologies. In the “Roots Haus” modern insulation materials made from renewable raw materials are used, while in Linz retrofitting with lifts and balconies significantly increases the quality of living. In recent years, the municipal GWG has retrofitted more than 300 lifts to increase living comfort. Creating a climate-neutral future is not just a goal, but is actively supported by projects that improve both the comfort for residents and the ecological framework.
