Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually, and terrifying 10 million of them get into our oceans, such as The ORF reports . Plastic bags, old fishing nets and cigarette stubs drive in shockingly large garbage islands that do not rot and endanger the marine dwellers in their habitats. A rethinking is indispensable: research on bioplastics and the use of artificial intelligence could be key to saving our sea.

The consequences of this development are fatal for our planet. Over 2/3 of the global farmers are already affected by microplastics that come into floors and threaten the harvest. The animal world also suffers; Animals confuse plastic with food and freeze or suffocate. Climate change is also further fueled by the enormous CO₂ emissions that arise in the production and burning of plastic. This is not a problem that is limited to a small part of the earth - it affects all of us!

In order to stop the plastic flood, global solutions and international cooperation must be required. This includes initiatives to reduce plastic consumption, the establishment of modern recycling systems, as well as educational measures to clarify the population about the dangers of plastic waste. Political measures such as plastic taxes and a ban on disposable plastic are now more necessary than ever. The time to act is urgent, because the future of our environment is at stake.
