New car prices are exploding: combustion engines and electric vehicles in a price war!
In the last few months, the price structure for new cars in Germany has changed noticeably. According to a current analysis by industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, the average transaction prices for the 20 most popular combustion engine models have increased significantly since April. In September, an average price of around 33,000 euros was recorded, an increase of more than 10 percent compared to April.
But there are also price increases in the area of electric cars, albeit at a slower pace. Here prices rose by a good 4 percent to around 40,500 euros. This slow growth has led to a relevant shift in the pricing landscape, halving the gap between the two types of propulsion. In order to underline the relevance of these findings, it should be noted that the evaluation was carried out without taking into account the sales figures of individual models, which requires a differentiated interpretation of the data.
Higher list prices and comparison of discounts
Contrary to popular belief, discounts only make a small contribution to making combustion engines more expensive. Dudenhöffer noted that the discount level for combustion engines has only fallen by 0.7 percentage points since April, while it has increased by 0.3 percentage points for electric vehicles. A key reason for the rising prices is the increase in list prices, which is particularly noticeable for combustion engines. This trend is also responsible for the narrowing of the price gap between drive types.
The price difference fell from 30 percent in April to 23 percent recently. Dudenhöffer suspects that the manufacturers' strategy is increasingly focused on reducing the price difference through more significant price increases for combustion engines. “A strategy appears to be taking hold to slowly reduce the price difference through higher price increases for combustion engines,” noted Dudenhöffer in his study. Whether this trend will continue remains to be seen and will be seen in the next few months.
The changes in the market are of great importance for consumers and dealers as well as the automotive industry as a whole. Market conditions are dynamic and show that purchasing decisions in the transport sector could be influenced by increased costs. If you want to know exactly what developments could influence prices in the future, you should keep an eye on the current market situation.
