Students in Glinde: Water damage hits the school center hard!
There was significant water damage at the Oher Weg school center in Glinde, Stormarn district, at the beginning of January. According to a report by LN Online The problem was caused by a defective sprinkler head on January 6th. The water spread from a classroom on the first floor through hallways and stairwells to the floors below, resulting in a hallway having to be closed for safety reasons.
The Glinde volunteer fire department was able to quickly clear the water. Employees from the school center, the city administration and various companies also provided support. After replacing the defective sprinkler head, classes were able to resume on Wednesday with only one classroom closed. However, high humidity levels were found in classrooms, adjoining rooms and hallways on the same day.
Impact on teaching
A total of one hallway and nine classrooms are affected, which has an impact on eight classes in grades five and six. Lessons for the affected classes were temporarily relocated to the new science wing, which has been offering modern learning opportunities since 2023. Since the specialist rooms are not constantly occupied, they were used as alternative options.
The school center, which began operations in 1974, is to be rebuilt and renovated in the coming years. Around 1,400 children and young people are currently learning there. While specialist companies continue to dry the affected rooms, the urgency of drying is emphasized in order to avoid mold formation. A team of specialists also checks for possible damage to the soil while test drilling was carried out. However, no results of these studies were available at the time of going to press.
Another incident related to the sprinkler system occurred on Monday, January 8th. The defective sprinkler system led to a large-scale operation by the fire department NDR reported. The fire alarm system was activated at 4 a.m. even though there was no fire. The fire department spent about two hours drying the building. Most visible signs of the incident had been removed by Tuesday, but the room with the broken sprinkler is expected to require more extensive renovations. Parts of the sprinkler system and fire alarm system have already been replaced, while the city administration cannot currently provide any information on the amount of damage.
