Fire department operation in Aigen: Major alarm exercise saves lives!
In March 2025, a large-scale alarm exercise by the volunteer fire department took place in Aigen im Ennstal. This dramatic operational exercise was used to train firefighters in dealing with complex human rescue and firefighting scenarios. According to reports from fireworld.at A fire was simulated in the generator room of a Fritz GmbH hydroelectric power plant, which resulted in the first alarm being raised at 6:45 p.m. The alarm keyword was “B04 – Electrical system”, and the fire brigade had to quickly adapt to a complex situation. Together with other fire departments, the alert level was increased in order to mobilize additional forces.
The exercise involved 140 emergency services from a total of 11 fire departments, including the Red Cross and the police. The teams took on specific tasks: The Aigen im Ennstal fire department, supported by the Lantschern fire department, rescued people from the heavily smoke-filled generator room. A dramatic rescue of four people and a dog from an attic balcony was also successfully carried out. Unfortunately, another person who was trapped under steel beams could only be rescued dead, which underlined the seriousness of the exercise. The water supply was ensured by constructing feeder lines from fire hydrants and a nearby stream, as the details of feuerwehr-aigen.at confirm.
Efficient cooperation of forces
The balance of the exercise shows positive results: a total of 19 vehicles and one rescue helicopter were used. The firefighters acted in a highly professional manner and all teams worked together smoothly. Incident management and fire commanders conducted a detailed debriefing to analyze lessons learned and improve the effectiveness of the operation. Mayor Thomas Klingler and section commander ABI Raimund Rojer praised the excellent performance and voluntary commitment of the fire brigade, which is essential in such critical situations.
