On Whit Monday, June 9, 2025, the Vienna fire department was called to a fire in an attic apartment on Landstraßer Hauptstrasse at around 12:30 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported clear clouds of smoke spreading over the roofs of Vienna. The fire brigade was deployed with turntable ladders to control the rapidly spreading fire.
The extinguishing work lasted until early afternoon and the flames were finally brought under control. However, the exact causes of the fire remain unclear, and this ensures ongoing investigations.
Traffic restrictions and diversions
Due to the operation, there were significant traffic restrictions on Landstraßer Hauptstrasse, which was closed. Affected bus routes had to be rerouted, including:
- Linie 4A Richtung Karlsplatz: Umleitung zwischen Löwengasse und Ungargasse
- Linie 4A Richtung Wittelsbachstraße: Umleitung zwischen Ziehrerplatz und Rasumofskygasse
- Linie 74A: An der Weiterfahrt in beiden Fahrtrichtungen gehindert
The smoke development was worrying for residents and passers-by, as the fire was visible from the top floor, and the quickly deployed emergency services worked under high pressure.
Causes of fire and prevention
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but there are general statistics that examine the most common causes of fire in Hessian buildings. Like the experts at IFS find that over 50 percent of all fires are caused by electricity or human error. Kitchen fires are one of the most common incidents, often caused by unintentionally turning on the stove that has flammable materials on it.

Such fires are often underestimated and careless handling of cigarette butts can also easily cause fires. The experts warn that technical defects in household appliances, such as refrigerators or washing machines, are often not detectable in advance and cannot be ruled out through preventive measures.
The investigation into the fire on Landstraßer Hauptstrasse continues as the city tries to prevent similar incidents in the future.
