Fire danger in Ternitz: used clothing container on fire again!

In Neunkirchen, two used clothing containers were set on fire in the last few days, which called the fire department and police into action. On December 12th at 4:52 p.m., the Ternitz-Pottschach fire department alerted the emergency services to the first incident. When we arrived, it turned out that one of the four containers was already ablaze. In order to quickly contain the fire, the container had to be opened and the contents stored inside removed. A total of seven firefighters were on duty with two vehicles, supported by a police patrol and two fire investigators, as the website meinbezirk.at reported.

Another fire leaves questions unanswered

Just a few days later, in the early hours of December 15th at 4:40 a.m., another fire broke out near the city center. Another used clothing container had to be opened to put out the fire. Here too, the cause of the fire remained unknown. 13 firefighters and a police patrol were deployed to fight the fire. Such incidents shed light on the need to dispose of old clothes properly and ensure their safe storage, according to recent reports.

The Red Cross plays a crucial role in the processing of used clothing. A large part of the donated clothing, especially damaged or unwearable items, is handed over to a collecting society that extracts valuable raw materials from it, such as doormats or cleaning rags. Five percent of the textiles collected are stored in disaster relief camps for different climate zones, showing how important it is to handle clothing donations responsibly. According to drk.de, unfortunately many tons of used clothing end up in the trash, which represents an additional environmental burden. The proceeds from the clothing collection also benefit social projects, for example by supporting youth work or disaster relief.
