Lightning strike ignites fire: historic home in Stinatz destroyed!
A dramatic fire in Stinatz affected the historic home on June 2, 2025. The fire department was alerted at 9:18 p.m. when large parts of the thatched roof were already fully ablaze. Witnesses reported meter-high flames and thick smoke that turned the evening into a nightmare.
The strong flying sparks made extinguishing work considerably more difficult. Despite these challenges, the emergency services managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the home, a transformer station, adjacent single-family homes and the fire station. The entire operation lasted around four hours and required the use of several fire engines. These also caught fire, but were quickly extinguished.
Cause and damage
The amount of damage is classified as “significant and currently difficult to estimate”. Fortunately, some cultural assets, including dolls in original Stinatz costume, were saved. The suspected cause of the fire is a lightning strike that occurred during a thunderstorm. The authorities have launched a fire investigation to clarify the exact circumstances.
Lightning strikes are a common cause of fires, especially in the summer months of June, July and August, studies show. According to GDV there is a clear connection between the number of earth lightning registered and the fire damage caused by it. These can cause major fire damage due to the immense heat generated after an impact.
Causes of fire and prevention
It is important to be aware of the most common causes of fires. According to the Fire Protection Center, this includes flammable work such as welding or soldering. Particular attention should be paid to safety measures in these activities, which are often carried out in both commercial and private settings.
In the hobby sector, devices such as hot glue guns and soldering irons are common and can quickly become sources of fire if care is not taken. Trained personnel are important in these contexts in order to recognize potential dangers in good time and to take safety precautions.
The repeated incidents of fires caused by lightning highlight the need for preventive measures, such as installing lightning rods, to avoid future fires.
