Storm surge warnings on the Baltic Sea: Keep an eye on water levels!

A new storm surge threatens the Baltic Sea coast, especially in the regions around Kiel, Eckernförde and Fehmarn. This force of nature is not a rare sight like that KN Online reported. According to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, there were five storm surges between July 2022 and June 2023, while seven were recorded in the 2021/2022 season. There is currently an acute flood warning in Schleswig-Holstein, which is why the water levels on the Baltic Sea must be monitored closely.

The different categories of storm surges show how serious the situation can be. A water level of 1.00 to 1.25 meters above the average water level is considered a “storm surge”, while “severe storm surges” can reach up to 2.00 meters. Current measurements off Kiel-Holtenau show a critical situation. Forecasts show both short and long term water level expectations, where BSH clearly indicates that further rising water levels are to be expected, particularly in the next few days. In addition, there are uncertainties in the models used to predict water levels.

Important warnings and information

If water levels rise, the flood center becomes active to pass on warning information to the population. The warning is issued via various channels such as radio, television and digital platforms. There are also rules of conduct in the event of a storm surge: correct preparation and quick action are crucial to getting safely out of the danger zone and protecting the most important gods.

Developments in water levels will be continuously monitored, while residents are encouraged to stay informed of the current situation and warnings in the media and through official channels.
