Austria rejoices: JJ triumphs at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025!

On May 18, 2025, the Austrian singer Johannes Pietsch, better known as JJ, landed at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. There he was received by Vice Chancellor and Minister of Culture and Media Andreas Babler, who warmly congratulated him on his victory in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). JJ represents Austria with the song “Wasted Love” and has thrilled the national music scene.

Babler expressed his joy and pride about the victory, which affects not only JJ but all of Austria. This triumph marks the third victory for Austria at the ESC since its founding in 1956, following the successes of Udo Jürgens in 1966 and Conchita Wurst in 2014. The victory gives Austria the opportunity to host the 70th Eurovision Song Contest in 2026.

The Eurovision Song Contest

The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual international music competition organized by the European Broadcasting Union. Each participating country submits an original song that will be performed live. The competition has its roots in Italy's Sanremo Music Festival and has been held since 1956, except in 2020 due to COVID-19. The ESC is the longest-running international music event on television, attracting hundreds of millions of viewers from around the world every year.

As a countertenor, JJ combines pop and high culture and brings a breath of fresh air to the competition scene. His background is just as diverse: He is the son of an Austrian father and a Filipino mother and grew up in Dubai. This cultural mix may be reflected in his music and could be part of his recipe for success.

The Vice Chancellor thanked not only JJ, but also the ORF and its program director Stefanie Groiss-Horowitz for the support that enabled JJ to take part in this important competition. Babler is optimistic that, despite existing budget constraints, next year's anniversary will be an unforgettable event and is already in talks with ORF.

The ESC has undergone a remarkable evolution since its inception, including the introduction of semi-finals, which have been part of the format since the 2000s, to accommodate the increased number of participants. In addition, technological advances such as color and satellite broadcasting have also contributed to the popularity of the competition.

With the large number of participating countries, among which 52 nations were represented in 2024, the competition has become an important cultural event that also helps to promote tourism in the host countries. The unique opportunity for artists to perform on an international level has had a significant impact not only on JJ's career, but also on that of many other former participants.

Overall, the Eurovision Song Contest is a celebration of music and cultures that continually captivates millions of viewers and promotes international talent, which is particularly impressively underlined by the call “United by Music”.
