Matthias Walkner's story is a combination of heroic triumphs and painful setbacks. While Christmas 2022 was spent in hospital after shattering his left ankle in a training accident in California, the 2018 Dakar winner can finally celebrate with his family again this year. “Last Christmas was the worst time of my life,” recalls Walkner, who had to pump himself full of morphine during this difficult period to relieve the unbearable pain. Thanks to six surgical procedures and a huge amount of perseverance, he regained his health and will now enjoy the holidays surrounded by his loved ones, like them crown reported.

Sporty return and new projects

With the help of his experience and talent, Walkner is now active in sports again and was happy about his appearances on television. This week he took part in various TV events, including a special round of discussions with ski star Marcel Hirscher, where the two chatted about their sporting experiences. “Matthias had huge talent, I initially looked up to him when it came to skiing,” praises the former ski racer, who describes Walkner as one of his best friends. Hirscher and Walkner have a shared history in motocross, which only strengthens the connection between the two athletes, as in Speedweek is to be read.

However, the challenges are not over yet. Walkner is preparing for the 2019 Dakar Rally, where he will compete as defending champion in South America. “I'm already working quite purposefully on a new project,” he says optimistically, despite the uncertainties that come with his collaboration with KTM since the company is insolvent. His sporting future remains uncertain, but Walkner remains confident and has planned a return to basics, including removing some screws remaining in his leg. His story is not just that of an athlete, but also that of a return to life that is characterized by the incredible and overcoming.
