Trump and Putin: Is peace now coming for Ukraine?
A crucial phone call between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin took place on Tuesday and lasted over 90 minutes. According to reports from Krone.at The two heads of state discussed a possible end to the war in Ukraine. Trump presented a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire that had already been accepted by Kiev. In return, Putin is said to have agreed to suspend attacks on energy facilities for this period. The White House stressed that further maritime ceasefire negotiations should continue to promote geopolitical stability.
However, as part of the conversation, Putin called for a complete halt to Western support for Ukraine to allow for a long-term ceasefire. Trump and Putin agreed to stay in touch and working groups will be set up to work out an agreement. While Trump spoke optimistically about the prospect of peace, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that current circumstances offer more hope for ending the conflicts than a few months ago. This was also confirmed by a White House representative. Rubio also highlighted that Ukraine was encouraged by the US to agree to a 30-day ceasefire, which has already been discussed and is now awaiting Moscow's approval.
