NY Rangers' Panarin: Sexual Assault Settlement
The New York Rangers and Artemi Panarin have reportedly made settlements following sexual assault by an employee. The NHL says the matter is closed.
NY Rangers' Panarin: Sexual Assault Settlement
The NHL said the New York Rangers told the league last year that they were investigating sexual assault allegations made by a team employee against player Artemi Panarin, after a report detailing the situation and settlement payments made to the woman was released Thursday.
Independent investigation
“The club retained an outside law firm to conduct an independent investigation, of which the league was fully informed,” the NHL said in a statement. “We consider the matter closed.”
Financial settlements
According to a report by The Athletic Panarin and Madison Square Garden Sports, which owns the Rangers, paid financial benefits to a former employee last year after she alleged that Panarin sexually harassed her.
Management response
An MSG spokesperson said in an email: “The matter has been resolved.” A request to Panarin's agent initially went unanswered. Coach Peter Laviolette referenced MSG's statement when asked by reporters about the issue during the Rangers' morning practice before their season finale.
Panarin's season performance
Artemi Panarin, a 33-year-old winger from Russia, continued to be the New York Rangers' leading scorer this season and is completing the sixth season of a seven-year, $81.5 million contract he signed in 2019.
