Straka on a roller coaster ride: from last to Ryder Cup candidate!
Sepp Straka finished the Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia in 30th and final place. The 32-year-old Viennese played a round of 71 on Sunday and finished the tournament with a total score of 287 strokes, which is 7 over par. For his participation in the FedExCup, Straka received prize money of 355,000 dollars, around 306,000 euros. Looking back on the PGA season, he has two tournament wins and earned over $10 million. Straka also reached the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time.
Last week, however, Straka had to miss the second playoff tournament in Maryland due to a “family matter.” Despite the current challenges, Straka has not given up hope of taking part in the Ryder Cup in Farmingdale, New York at the end of September.
Ryder Cup qualification
Qualifying for the Ryder Cup team is currently a key issue for Straka. He recently won the 2025 Truist Championship, taking fifth place in the Ryder Cup European qualifiers with 942.73 points. This secures him one of the six automatic qualification spots, which is important for his chances of taking part in the Ryder Cup. His direct competitor Shane Lowry moved up to second place with 1,124.18 points.
Qualifying ends on August 24, 2025 at the Betfred British Masters. Straka could represent a second consecutive Ryder Cup team in September under captain Luke Donald, having already debuted in 2023.
Ranking overview
Current rankings show Rory McIlroy leading the European rankings with 2,955.70 points, while Tommy Fleetwood is currently in eighth place with 814.33 points. Straka's impressive victory in the Truist Championship, where he defeated Lowry in the final round, could be the deciding factor for his important role in the upcoming Ryder Cup.
Luke Donald, the team's captain, will announce the final selection of players on September 1, and Straka will be in line for a "captain's ticket" if the points are not enough.
