North Korea increases support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reiterated his continued support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict in a recent meeting with Sergei Shoigu, Russian national security secretary. The meeting, which lasted more than two hours in Pyongyang, was aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries, particularly on security issues. Kim expressed gratitude for Russia's solidarity and stressed the need to expand cooperation in various areas, state news agency KCNA reported.
Strategic partnership in focus
Like the Russian news agency Interfax reported, a message from President Vladimir Putin was also discussed, which reiterated maximum attention to the implementation of the agreements from previous meetings. Shoigu underlined Russia's "unconditional readiness" to maintain the strategic partnership with North Korea, which includes mutual support in the event of external aggression. This treaty shows the increasingly close connection between the two countries in times of global tensions.
The talks also covered the ongoing situation on the Korean peninsula and Moscow's dialogue with the US government under President Trump. Both Ukraine and Russia had previously declared their willingness in principle to enter into a ceasefire. North Korea reportedly recently sent additional troops to Ukraine to support Russia in its war. It is estimated that between 10,000 and 12,000 North Korean soldiers could already be assisting Russia, while the American services indicate that between 1,000 and 3,000 North Korean soldiers could again be active in Ukraine.
