Kyiv under rocket attack: fear and injuries in the capital!

On Sunday night, Russia attacked Kyiv again with missiles. According to the military administration, at least three people were injured. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported several fires in at least three districts of the capital. From 4:00 a.m. there was an air alert for the entire Ukraine. The air force warned of impending attacks on the western regions of the country. To protect its airspace, Poland deployed interceptors, while there were no reports of damage in other western Ukrainian areas at this time. Loud explosions were also heard in Kiev and Klitschko appealed to the population to go to shelters.

The extent of the attack on Kiev was initially unclear, but the Ukrainian Air Force reported that a combined Russian attack took place with 23 rockets, cruise missiles and over 100 drones. Of these, 13 rockets and cruise missiles were intercepted, but the air defense was largely powerless against the Iskander-M ballistic missiles. Damage was reported in Kiev, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy and Mykolaiv regions. In Mykolaiv there were reports of three injuries and damage to residential buildings. Outside the capital, an attack was recorded on Friday in Kryvyi Rih, killing at least 19 people, including nine children.

Background of the attacks

On November 17, 2024, a massive rocket attack took place on Ukraine, which Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha described as one of the worst of the war. The attacks targeted critical energy infrastructure across Ukraine using around 120 missiles and 90 drones. Significant damage occurred in the Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Rivne and Volhynia regions. Ukraine's largest private energy supplier, DTEK, confirmed damage to a thermal power plant, leading to temporary power shutdowns in several areas. Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko warned in advance of another massive attack on the power grid.

In light of this escalation of violence, the Ukrainian authorities and military have stepped up their preparations to prevent further attacks on critical infrastructure and the civilian population. The potential for further attacks remains high, leaving the situation extremely tense for the population in the affected regions.
