Israel closes embassy in Ireland: a diplomatic earthquake!

A diplomatic earthquake shakes relations between Israel and Ireland! Israel has announced the closure of its embassy in Dublin - a move that is causing outrage. The reason? Ireland has recognized Palestinian statehood and supports South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over alleged acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

"The decision to close the embassy in Dublin was taken due to the Irish government's extreme anti-Israel policies," Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Sunday. He added: "Ireland has crossed every red line in its relations with Israel. Israel will focus its resources on promoting bilateral relations with countries worldwide that are consistent with Israel's interests and values." A clear blow to the Irish government!

Ireland's reaction: an outcry of outrage

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris immediately responded to the decision, calling it “deeply regrettable.” He clarified: "I strongly reject the claim that Ireland is anti-Israel. Ireland is pro-peace, human rights and international law." Harris stressed that Ireland wants a two-state solution in which Israel and Palestine can live in peace and security. “Nothing will stop us from standing up for human rights and international law,” he added.

These diplomatic tensions are not new. Ireland has repeatedly stood up for the Palestinians in recent weeks as Israel continues its attacks on the Gaza Strip, which have already left at least 44,976 people dead. The Palestinian cause is well received in Ireland, with parallels often being drawn to the centuries-long British occupation regime.

A new diplomatic course

The embassy closure is not the only sign of Israel's growing isolation. Last week, Ireland supported South Africa's legal action against Israel at the ICJ, further deepening the country's international isolation. In May, Ireland became one of only three European countries to recognize the state of Palestine and support claims of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

In response to the Irish stance, Israel withdrew its ambassador from Dublin and now plans to open a new embassy in Moldova. A clear indication that Israel is looking to refocus its diplomatic efforts as tensions with Ireland continue to rise.
